The Ratio of Glycated Albumin to HbA1c and Glycated Albumin Are Good Indicators of Diabetic Nephropathy in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

A recent article in Diabetes/Metabolism Research and Reviews submitted by Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University indicates that the ratio of glycated albumin (GA) to HbA1c as well as the absolute level of GA may be superior to HbA1c as indicators associated with the presence of diabetic nephropathy. 206 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were studied in order to “investigate the association between serum levels of GA, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and GA/HbA1c ratio” to kidney function. In addition to GA and GA/HbA1c, the duration of type 2 diabetes, systolic blood pressure, mean blood glucose, and retinopathy were all found to be independent variables that predicted diabetic nephropathy, while HbA1c was not found to be an independent variable.
